The surface of the water in Lewellen Pool was calm as the Ball State University swimming and diving team stood along the edge of the pool getting their pictures taken. There might have been smiles on their faces, but everyone was thinking about the upcoming relays at Notre Dame.
"For our freshmen and sophomores, it's kinda more for us to see where they are," senior team captain Abby Arnold said. "It's a way for the new people to get an ice-breaker of college swimming."
Coach Laura Seibold-Caudill named Meghan Patterson, Erika Paul and Megan Ploetz as her top recruits for the women's side. Mark Augustyn, Daniel Tracey and Kyle Hembree were also named for the men.
"I think we lost six-point scores in MAC," co-captain Ritchie Caudill said. "We have a lot of room to grow."
Co-coaches Seibold-Caudill and Bob Thomas both said they have high expectations of the new freshmen team members.
"Our number one priority is to beat Miami in a dual meet," Ritchie Caudill said. "Another team goal is to win our own invitational, which is the Doug Coers Invitational."
Caudill also said that the team would like to hold a .750 winning percentage, rank in the top 12 in the MAC and place in the top three at the MAC championships. All members of the team are looking forward to the first regular season meet against MAC-rival Miami.
The women's team faces Miami on Saturday, Nov. 5, and the men's team face Miami on Saturday, Nov. 12, with both meets at Ball State. "There's no greater feeling than having even 100 yelling fans when we're going against our rivals," Ritchie Caudill said.
The swimming and diving team will be in the "Bird Bath" - Caudill's nickname for Lewellen Pool - on Friday, Oct. 14, in the "Red-White and Alumni" meeting.
