The second meet of the season for the swimming and diving team may not count as a win or loss. It's about lap times and individual performances.
"Freshmen are going to have to show us what they can do," graduate assistant coach Erika Janssen said. Janssen added the team has "a few holes that need to be filled."
Ideas of who will fill those holes will begin this weekend at the annual Red-White meet held at Lewellen Pool. This meet gives the members of the team a good chance to prove themselves to the coaches, co-coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said.
"For all purposes, it's a dual meet," co-coach Bob Thomas said.
Thomas added that it gives the coaches an idea of who's going to compete in the upcoming events.
"The incoming freshmen get an idea of what to expect," Thomas said.
While the coaches are happy with both teams placing second out of eight schools at the Notre Dame relays last weekend, they still felt as though they have room for advancement.
"We can really focus on improving individual swimmers," Janssen said. "We saw a lot of things that need improvement."
The Red-White meet will also be held at the same time as the annual alumni meet.
The alumni meet is always the same weekend as the Ball State University football Homecoming and is a way for the swimming and diving team to stay connected to their alumni members.
"We want [the alumni] to come back on a regular basis," Seibold-Caudill said.
The meet is a chance to allow swimming and diving alumni members to get back into the pool and swim.
"It's a fun meet," Thomas said. "It's a way to showcase our alumni."
Along with the meet, the current team hosts a tailgating party before the football game for their alumni. This gives the current team a chance to talk with alumni and do a little fund raising effort at the game.
The swimming and diving team will be selling programs about the team while running the concessions stand, on the south side of the stadium under the home team seating area.
