This weekend's meets at Buffalo, on Friday night for both the men and women's swimming and diving teams, and Akron, on Saturday night, just for the women's team, will prove to be a challenge for the start of the season that the teams have been anticipating all preseason.
"It'll be a big test for us ... we have yet to see what they [Buffalo and Akron] have on their squad, and how they are performing up to this point," co-coach Bob Thomas said.
"This weekend is a battle, it's a [Mid-American Conference] meet, so it is big in terms of confidence. It'll put us where we need to be going into two weeks from now," senior Ritchie Caudill, who competes in the IM and breaststroke, said.
The swimming portion of the meet will be very competitive, with a lot of action happening in the diving pool as well.
Senior Paige Vernasco will be returning to the diving pool in her first regular season MAC tournament since a neck injury her sophomore year.
"At Purdue last weekend, either I was going to go embarrass myself, or do all right, and I hung in there pretty well in 1 meter." Vernasco said, concerning her re-occurring injury.
"Akron has always had very good divers, so it'll be some tough competition for the divers," Vernasco said.
One of the biggest concerns for the coaches is the bus trip and how it will effect the swimmers' performance both Friday and Saturday.
"If we've done things correctly this week, and the bus trip doesn't take too much out of them, we should have a good meet," Thomas said.
