During the course of the season, there are meets a team cannot lose. For the Ball State University swim teams, that type of meet was held Friday as they competed in the inter-squad Red-White Meet.
With the captains of both the women's and men's teams picking the swimmers for the Red and White teams, the white team swept both the men and women overall competition, winning 108-106 in the women's division and 139-135 in the men's division.
"With the white team, I put all the seniors on one team so we could go out together," Ritchie Caudill, captain of the White team, said. "With everything else, I tried to make everything as even as possible, and it turned out well."
In the men's division, Caudill and Adam Konopka won two events. Caudill won the 200-yard breaststroke and 100-yard breaststroke, while Konopka won the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard butterfly.
"The guys starting out the season were in the worst shape I ever had an upper class come back, and my expectations really dropped," coach Bob Thomas said. "They really stepped up tonight. They are starting to get in shape, and we are starting to see their old form from last year."
Along with the juniors and seniors coming into form, this meet also give the coaches the opportunity to look at freshmen.
"Tonight went very smooth," Thomas said. "They all had a lot of fun, and it gave us a chance to see what our freshmen have to offer to the team."
In the women's division, freshmen won several of the events as Erica Paul won the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly, Megan Plotez won the 200-yard breaststroke, and Megan Patterson won the 200-yard freestyle by nearly 15 seconds.
"We were mainly looking at the freshmen during this meet," Thomas said. "The big challenge is to see how the freshmen can adjust to the college lineup, It was nice to know that those three combined for over half the wins in the women's competitions."
