Dalmations, firefighters and men in dresses sprinted down Riverside Avenue pushing beds on wheels during Friday's 25th annual Homecoming bed races. Fifty-nine teams competed in eight categories.
The Side-Out Crew, five students from Studebaker East Complex, won the bed race overall, as well as the male residence hall category.
"We're all freshmen, so it was our first bed race," Brian Kirschner said. "The experience was awesome."
Like the Side-Out Crew, many teams participated in the bed races for the first time.
Sophomore Brittany Hall of Alpha Phi sorority was excited about participating for the first time. She and her teammates were dressed as firefighters.
"We're putting out Toledo's fire," Hall said.
Students representing the Public Relations Student Society of America dressed up as dalmations and Cruella DeVille.
Delta Tau Delta fraternity won the award for best costume for the second year in a row. The Delta Tau Delta team used "opposite day" as its theme, wearing masks, shirts, ties and pants backwards. When it was their turn to race, the members ran backwards - in the direction of their costumes.
"We're here to make the students happy," senior Tyler Perdue said. "We go for the costumes, not the win. We think about what our costumes are going to be year-round."
Junior Vince Eagan, co-host of the bed races, said he was happy with the turnout at this year's races.
"It went great," he said. "A lot of people came out, and we had fun."
