Mid-American Conference teams get off to rough starts

WEST DIVISION

Toledo (4-1, 2-0 MAC)

Toledo had the best non-conference schedule in the MAC this season, going 2-1 after defeating both Western Illinois and Temple, only losing to Fresno State.

In MAC play, the Rockets beat Western Michigan 56-23 and Eastern Michigan 30-3. Currently, Toledo is in first place in the MAC-West and is one of two undefeated teams in MAC play.

Central Michigan (3-3, 2-1 MAC)

Central Michigan University started the season 1-1, losing their first game to Indiana 20-13 and winning their MAC opener against Miami, 38-37.

Following this win, the Chippewas gave up an average of 508 yards of offense in their next two games to Eastern Michigan and Penn State. They have recovered, winning their past two games.

Eastern Michigan (3-3, 2-1 MAC)

Eastern Michigan finished their non-conference play at 1-2 as they lost their season opener against Cincinnati and were shutout by then - No. 14 Michigan.

In Mid-American play, the Eagles are 2-1, defeating in-state rival Central Michigan in overtime on a field goal 23-20 and Kent State 27-20. Eastern Michigan's only MAC lost occurred this past week to Toledo 30-3.

Northern Illinois (2-3, 1-1 MAC)

The Huskies opened the season with two losses: Michigan by 16 points and Northwestern 38-37, after a failed two-point conversion with six seconds left. They won their next game against Tennessee Tech.

Against MAC teams, the Huskies are averaging 40 points per game but have a 1-1 record, losing to Akron and defeating Miami.

Western Michigan (3-3, 1-2 MAC)

Western Michigan opened their with a 31-19 loss to Virginia. In addition to losing the season opener, the next week Western Michigan lost their MAC opener against Toledo 56-23.

The Broncos won their next three games, defeating Southern Illinois 34-28, winless Temple 19-16 and Buffalo 31-21, averaging 384 yards of total offense.

Western Michigan's three-game winning streak ended last week when Ball State defeated the Broncos in a five-overtime game 60-57.

EAST DIVISION

Bowling Green (3-2, 2-0 MAC)

After finishing the season ranked No. 23 in the nation, Bowling Green opened the season with a loss to Wisconsin 56-42.

Following this loss, the Falcons win a close game against Ball State 40-31 but lost the next their game to Boise State 48-20.

Bowling Green defeated Temple 70-7, the most points a team from the MAC has scored in this year, and Ohio 38-14. Currently the Falcons are one of two teams in the MAC with an undefeated record in conference play and are in first place in the MAC-East.

Akron (3-2, 2-1 MAC)

Akron began the season with 25-point loss to Purdue, 49-24. Following this game, the Zips held Middle Tennessee State to just 54 rushing yards, winning the game 17-7 to get their first win of the year.

In conference play, Akron's Luke Getsy threw for over 400 yards, as the Zips defeated Northern Illinois 48-42 in overtime to win their MAC opener. Despite this win, the Zips lost their next MAC game to Central Michigan 31-17, but were able to get their conference record above .500 when they defeated winless Buffalo last week 13-7.

Ohio (2-3, 1-1 MAC)

Under new head coach Frank Solich, the Bobcats have reached the midway point of the season with a 2-3 overall record.

Ohio began the season with a loss to Northwestern, but defeated Pittsburgh 16-10. The following week, the Bobcats were shutout by Virginia Tech 45-0.

In MAC play, Ohio opened against Kent State at home, but fell to Bowling Green 38-14.

Miami (2-3, 1-1 MAC)

Miami started the with a 34-14 loss to Ohio State. The Red Hawks record dropped to 0-2 the next week as they lost to Central Michigan 38-37 after a go-ahead touchdown with less than two minutes remaining.

Miami defeated Kent State 27-10 and Cincinnati University 44-16. The two-game winning streak ended this past week when Miami fell to Northern Illinois.

Buffalo (0-5, 0-2 MAC)

Buffalo began the season shut out against Connecticut and Syracuse. The Bulls first points of the season came against Rutgers with a field goal in a 17-3 loss.

Following an 0-2 non-conference schedule, the Bulls lost their first MAC game to Western Michigan 31-21.

This past weekend, Buffalo played in their closest game of the year, only losing to Akron by six points, 13-7.

Kent State (1-4, 0-3 MAC)

Kent State opened the season allowing 685 yards of total offense against the Michigan State Spartans in a 49-14 loss. The Golden Flashes recovered from this game to get their only victory of the season, as they defeated Southeastern Missouri State 33-12.

Kent State since then has lost their first three MAC games, losing to Miami (Ohio) and 27-20 against Eastern Michigan. In MAC games, the Flashes have allowed 223.67 rushing yards per game and have led once.
