An explosive offensive scoring attack resulted in the second conference win of the season for the Ball State University field hockey team. Led by Lindsay Quay's hat trick, the Cardinals beat Central Michigan 6-0 last Saturday.
"It was a huge win because that proves how good we are when the team plays as one," Quay said.
Ball State (3-12, 2-6 Mid-American Conference) earned its largest victory of the season as its previous two wins came by one goal. However, the Cardinals were unable to maintain their offensive momentum as they were shutout 1-0 against Miami on Sunday.
Quay's hat trick was the first of her career. The junior forward is second on the team in goals (8) and points (18).
"It was exciting," Quay said of her first hat trick. "I had some good passes from my teammates. I was the beneficiary of good teamwork."
Chantelle Isaac scored two goals against the Chippewas. Isaac has a team-best 10 goals and 21 points this season.
Sophomore Katie Kloeckener scored her first career goal on an assist from Quay. It was one of five second half goals by the Cards.
"It was a great win for the team," coach Annette Payne said. "The goals were a direct result of ball possession, which is very key for us."
Goalkeeper Tracy Bannister stopped seven shots and earned her second shutout of the year.
Miami (8-9, 5-4 MAC) scored a first-half goal and held on for the 1-0 win. The RedHawks outshot Ball State 19-14 and had more penalty corners (11-6).
Kloeckener registered a game-high seven shots and Bannister made nine saves for the Cards.
"We had some opportunities," Payne said. "We weren't as sharp as we were [against Central Michigan]; we weren't as fluid."
