Cardinals dominated by Western Michigan

Ball State gives up 73 kills, 25 blocks in five-game loss

Ball State University's women's volleyball coach Randy Litchfield didn't have much to say after his team dropped a five-game loss to Western Michigan on Friday.

His team was dominated through the first two games, falling 30-14 and 30-18. They then slid by in games three and four with 32-30 and 35-33 wins. The Cardinals were dominated again in the fifth set 15-7 to fall 3-2 to the Broncos.

"We came into this weekend thinking we were a new team, and then we just put forth a disgusting effort," Litchfield said.

The Cardinals (10-7, 4-3 in the Mid-American Conference) gave up 73 kills, including 24 a piece to Shaylen Jackson and Kathryn Babcock. Jackson only had five errors, tallied up 14 blocks (seven solo and seven assists) and had a hitting percentage of .404.

"Western Michigan has one terrific player," Litchfield said of Jackson. "And we let her just dominate the match."

Jackson was able to build on her third place standing in the MAC in kills per game with her dominating performance over the Cardinals.

The Cardinals had their own struggles, with no player earning a hitting percentage of over .200 and 46 total errors over five games as a team.

Ball State was out blocked 25 to six, had nine less kills and twice as many attack errors as the Broncos (12-6, 4-4 MAC).

While three Cardinals, Sarah Obras, Rachel Refenes and Kelly Cochran had double-digit kills, and each had over seven attack errors.

The Cardinals had a negative hitting percentage in the first game and 15 attack errors in game four.

Ball State will continue the long road trip when they head to DeKalb, Ill., today to take on Northern Illinois.

"We got out, and we play like we did, and we'll come home quick with a 0-2 weekend," Litchfield said.
