WOMEN'S GOLF: Cards drop from second in tourney

Three members finish in top-10 of Cardinal Classic

The Ball State University women's golf team finished fourth in the Cardinal Classic Tuesday. Kallie Harrison, Katie Sundberg and Julie Harder all scored in the overall top ten.

"Having three players finish in the top 10 is a good accomplishment for this team and is good for their individual confidence," coach Katherine Mowat said. Harrison, a transfer student from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, finished the tournament second overall, posting a final round 75. This marks the second time this year that she has finished a tournament with the Cardinals' lowest score.

"She has been outstanding," Mowat said. "To complete this team we needed a player like her." In addition to Harrison, Sundberg finished sixth overall, shooting 74-75 over the two days, and Harder recovered after posting a first round 79, to finish the tournament in a tie for ninth.

Despite having three players in the top ten, Ball State shot a final round team score of 316, 12 strokes more than the 304 they posted in the first round. As a result, the team fell from just one shot behind the lead to fourth place and seven shots behind the tournament winner, Butler University.

"We had a very good first round and knew that we had to repeat that if we were to move up into the lead," Mowat said. "We were just one score short."

Of the five players who competed for Ball State, only Harder shot a lower score in Tuesday's final round than in Monday's first round.

This was the case for most teams, as only four teams out of the 14 team field posted a lower round Tuesday than they had on Monday.

"It rained a lot [Monday night], and the course conditions were very different," Mowat said. "We were not getting as many bounces, and the course played shorter."

The fourth place team finish at the Cardinal Classic was the highest finish Ball State has had this season and is an improvement upon the team's fifth place finish in the tournament last year.

The Cardinals' next tournament is the Unlimited Potential/Bay Tree Classic this weekend in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
