WOMEN'S GOLF: BSU comes home for Cardinal Classic

Coach says team must win this year's tournament

The women's golf team is looking to win its own tournament. Ball State University plays host to the Cardinal Classic at 8 a.m. today and Tuesday at the Players Club in Yorktown, Ind.

The Cardinals finished fifth overall at the 2004 Cardinal Classic, but head coach Katherine Mowat said the team's goal is to win the title this year.

"We have to win this tournament," Mowat said. "We have been playing very well in qualifying. Our top five is the same as last year except transfer [Kallie Harrison], so we're stronger and that much more experienced."

Mowat said the team will need to be patient in order to be successful.

"We will have to play very good golf to win," she said. "We can't get ahead of ourselves. We have to take it one stroke at a time, one day at a time, and we will win."

Western Michigan took the team title in last's year tournament. Julie Harder was the low Cardinal golfer, finishing tied for ninth with rounds of 76-74.

This is one of two tournaments this fall where Ball State will compete in Indiana. The Cards will compete in October at the Shoot-Out At The Legends in Franklin, Ind.

The Cards are very familiar with The Players Club as they practice at the course.

"The team is very familiar and comfortable," Mowat said. "We're very excited about hosting the tournament. The environment is very special and doesn't come very often.

"We're really looking forward to it."

This is the Cards' second fall tournament. Ball State finished sixth out of nine teams at the Hawkeye Invitational, led by transfer Kallie Harrison.

Ball State will have the same lineup as the previous tournament with Harrison, Katie Sundberg, Amber Uphaus, Holly Jones and Julie Harder all competing for the Cards.

Carmen Bodine, Sarah Windlan and Ashley Burgess will compete as individuals for the Cardinals. It is the first home tournament for Burgess and the first collegiate tournament for Windlan.

"It's a tremendous opportunity for those three," Mowat said. "So really, we have eight players who can essentially win."
