Televangelists and raunchy late-night talk show hosts have traded insults over the years, but a small group of Ball State University students marries the two in the WCRD show the "Sunday Night Revival."
The WCRD radio show, which made its television premiere last night on Cardinal Vision 57, bears little resemblance to a traditional religious broadcast.
Show host and senior John Moore said the show isn't you're typical religious broadcast.
"We run it like its a religious radio show, but it's not," Moore said. "I'll do a sermon at the beginning of the show, but it's more of a stand-up routine. This week it's going to be about television."
Moore said up until Fall 2004, "Sunday Night Revival" had a lot more jokes poking fun at religion.
"We got suspended last year for a joke I made about Jewish people," Moore said. "So since then, we've kind of kept it away from religion."
Moore said, in the episodes after the suspension, "Sunday Night Revival's" cast was strongly encouraged not to say anything offensive.
This censorship affected the show; people were more afraid to take risks, Moore said.
"We were almost turned into a real religious show at one point because we couldn't say anything, and we all know religious people aren't funny," Moore said.
Co-Host Jason Quick, who is a Ball State senior, said trying to be edgy and funny but not overly offensive can be a delicate balance.
"We try to be as funny as possible without offending too many people," Quick said. "We try to go out on a limb and say things that most people wouldn't say."
Quick said he and Moore have been working together on the show for three years. Before that, they hosted the WCRD morning show "Cardinal Coffee" for two years.
In addition to material by Moore and Quick, "Sunday Night Revival" features contributions by Ball State students Shelby Siefring, Toni Painter, Vince Eagan and Andy Martin.
"Sunday Night Revival" airs at 10 p.m. Sundays on 91.3 FM WCRD and Cardinal Vision 57.
