Sixteen Henry County sheriff’s deputies and medics left for New Orleans on Thursday night to assist Jefferson Parish, La., law enforcement. The officers, who volunteered to travel to Louisiana, did not know what was in store for them at the disaster area.
They arrived Friday night and were greeted by horrible smells, downed power lines and the possibility of being shot at by looters. The team was in full armor for the duration of its assignment, wearing bullet proof vests and carrying military-style artillery.
Throughout the weekend, the volunteers’ assignments varied. They provided security at a mall after another local mall was burned down by looters. They also provided security at the airport as tens of thousands of people trudged through foot-deep trash piles to catch a free flight out of the area.
Then the team headed into downtown New Orleans to travel from house to house, searching for people.
The group is still assisting Louisiana law enforcement and doesn’t know when it will return to Indiana.
