Public transit receives additional funding

Muncie public transit will be receiving 8.9 percent more in state funding than last year. The State Budget Committee is giving Muncie almost $1.3 million dollars in support, up from a little less than $1.2 million last year.

The money is coming from the Public Mass Transportation Fund, a state fund which sets aside 0.635 percent of the state sales and use tax, and gives it to systems based on "service area population, passenger trips, total vehicle miles, and locally derived income data," according to the PMT Web site.

About $32.7 million is being given out statewide, and Muncie is receiving almost 4 percent of the total amount.

The Muncie Indiana Public Transportation System recently was awarded the 2005 American Public Transportation Association's Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award, according to the MITS Web site. The award is one of the highest honors a public transportation system can earn. It is based on how efficient and effective a system is in its community.
