Sounds of seductive, high-voltage Latin jazz will fill the aisles of Pruis Hall auditorium tonight at 8 p.m. The Miami-based Latin band Tiempo Libre will perform their distinctive sounds of jazz mixed with traditional Cuban and Afro-Cuban music.
According to the group’s official Web site, http://www.tiempolibremusic.com, “Since their formation in 2001, Tiempo Libre have been on a mission: to share the musical heritage in which they grew up with as wide an audience as possible, reinterpreting and reinvigorating traditional Cuban music with a youthful, modern sound.”
With that goal in mind and also to support the release of their upcoming album — Arroz con Mango — the band is touring excessively throughout the United States. Some of the performances will include The Ravinia Festival, the Java Jazz Festival in Indonesia, Festival International de Louisiane and the Society of the Performing Arts in Houston, according to the Timpo Libre Web site.
They have been brought to Ball State in hopes of reaching out to the diversity on campus. “Part of a student’s university experience should be to expand one’s understanding of different cultures,” Bob Myers, Director of Emens and Pruis Halls, said. He hopes that the interesting rhythms of Tiempo Libre and the intimate space provided by Pruis Hall might even encourage the audience to get up and dance. “This will be one night a college student is sure to remember,” Myers said.
