OUR VIEW: Eyes open

AT+óGé¼-åISSUE:+óGé¼-åEveryday art by local artists shouldn't be overlooked

Imagine if Ball State University declared one day a year "No Music Day." Music would be banned across campus - radio stations would not broadcast, the Atrium would be quiet, cars driving down the street wouldn't blast tunes and your iPods would be locked away. No music at all for one day. Even if you don't notice every time you hear music as you walk around campus, you'd notice if it wasn't there.Like music, visual art is everywhere you go, whether or not you "see" it. From the sculptures in the Quad to the student photos in the Art and Journalism Building, from Frog Baby to the posters of famous paintings hanging in your classrooms, art is all over this campus. There's no escaping it - and that's a good thing. So often, we assume something is not valuable as a work of "Art" unless it's housed in a museum or noted in our textbooks, but the art we pass every day, the art our peers and our professors boldly display in public view, the art of our daily lives is just as valuable and just as worthy of our attention. The Student Art Gallery's new initiative to bring art to the sidewalks and windows of campus is a great way to encourage appreciation of everyday art. Perhaps with this development, more student-artists will step up and begin putting their works in the public forum to encourage discussion and foster art appreciation. However, the art scene in Muncie - while not overwhelming now, it is growing - can't thrive or even survive without the support of young, innovative artists and young, interested art viewers: That'd be you. Without the support of their audiences, artists can't always continue producing their works and finding venues in which to do so. It doesn't have to cost money and it doesn't have to involve walking into a museum, but any support you can give to the arts is vital to keeping the Muncie art scene alive and thriving. After all, you'd miss it if were gone.
