On the heals of Apple’s latest release, the iPod nano, those who already own iPods are left to wonder if their older iPods are being pushed out of style by this new unveiling. Although it is true current iPod owners will not have the functionality of the iPod nano, many manufacturers have released new accessories for the current iPods that can offer something the nano is yet to have — personal flair.
During Apple’s announcement of the nano yesterday, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing, said, “The iPod economy is thriving with over 1,000 accessories now available ... There are more ways than ever to get the perfect accessory to complement your iPod for use at home, on the go and in the car.”
One of these fashionable cases is the Mini Fling. Digital Lifestyle Outfitters (DLO), has released the Mini Fling as an answer to all the fashion conscious iPod mini owners who could no longer go without the use of a cosmetic mirror while listening to their iPod minis. The Mini Fling is available in several metallic colors, as well as the new faux crocodile version, and retails for $34.99.
SpeckProducts offers up a less feminine way to spice up your iPod with the iGuy, a bendable, posable companion for your iPod mini. iGuy acts as a rubberized case for your iPod, protecting it from the everyday wear and tear it could receive. The iGuy features a removable screen protector, as well as full access to controls, headphone plug and the hold switch.
Another feature of the iGuy is that it can remain, unlike many others, on the iPod as it sits in the dock charging; all you have to do is give iGuy a rest, too, according to the SpeckProducts Web site, and put iGuy in a seated position. The iGuy retails for $34.95.
If iPod owners aren’t looking to dress up their iPod, but rather add to its functionality, Griffin Technology offers functional products to get the most use from the iPod.
The iTrip is an attachment to allow a car radio to play iPod owners’ music directly from their iPods. The newest iTrip retails for $39.99. The iTrip with LCD offers a backlit LCD screen for easy viewing of frequency as well as a knob on the side of the transmitter to allow for easy selection of a frequency. The most drastic change between the original iTrip and the new model, however, is the selectable LX or DX modes of broadcasting.
According to a Griffin Technology press release, “This allows the user to adjust for the absolute best possible audio under real-world conditions. Even in the toughest situations, such as large cities with lots of radio stations crowding the dial, iTrip’s DX Mode delivers a noise level that’s below that of a cassette tape adapter, allowing the music to punch through cleanly. The results are stunning.”
Griffin also offers an iSqueez for $9.99, to “Give your iPod its own seat in the car.”
So although you might not have enough money to afford the $249 price tag on the iPod nano, there are still options available to you, and you might just think about sprucing up the iPod you have now, because — who knows — maybe in the future people will judge you not by your clothes, but by what your iPod is wearing.
