MEN'S TENNIS: Senior will start season in national ranks

If past history proves to be true, Matt Baccarani and Patrick Thompson will be heading to the ITA All-American Tournament for the second year in a row.

Baccarani and Thompson will start the season ranked No. 15 in the nation, which in the past has been good enough to ensure a birth into the main draw into the ITAs. The ITA will announce the field today.

“These certainly are good numbers,” Richards said.

Last season Baccarani and Thompson earned a birth through being the top ranked returning team to their region, which they will not be this year.

The duo have been playing with each other since their sophomore years at Ball State University, something to which Richards attributes their success.

“One of the things we’ve done is try and find some guys and put them together early in their career,” he said. “That way we have the benefit of two guys returning each year for these preseason rankings.”

Baccarani also was ranked No. 79 in the nation by the ITA, despite being unranked at the end of last season.

“It’s been a while since we had anyone ranked in singles,” Richards said. “It shows a lot of respect for [Matt]. Anywhere in the top 100 is a very good ranking. I’m pleased.”
