LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Swart encourages students with face-to-face interaction

Dear Editor,

I had the pleasure of working with Swart when he was the dean of engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. ... Swart did everything in his power to help all students, but he paid special attention to helping women and students of color - black and Hispanic - excel in engineering. He did more than talk; he provided resources from the dean's office and encouraged his chairs to do the same. Through his efforts, many students of color became engaged in undergraduate research with engineering faculty, which resulted in a significant number of them going on for advanced degrees in engineering. ...

He could often be seen walking with students across campus. They felt comfortable with him, and he was comfortable with them. His approach was especially critical for female students and students of color - especially black and Hispanic students. ...

On a personal note, when I decided to return to school for my doctorate, Swart provided encouragement, ideas and guidance. He read sections of my dissertation and provided assistance with my data analysis. Today, I am an assistant professor of social work at an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). Swart is not satisfied. ... He continues to encourage me in my professional endeavors. I am a black female.

Swart would be a welcome addition to your institution. The students and faculty of color will definitely find in him a friend, mentor, advocate and role model.
