Dear editor,
Can someone explain to me why Ball State University is playing Division I football, besides the fact that we get large chunks of money for playing better teams?
By my count, the team is 17-29 over the last four years. Last year's 2-9 team was outscored 405 to 225 and gave up 36.8 points per game.
We lost 21 straight games from 1998 to 2000.
I recall reading a story in the Daily News last year that attendance at home football games was close to failing the NCAA Division I standards of the time - maybe it's because people hate seeing their team lose so often?
The first loss of the 2005 season was a bad one, 56-0 to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Don't kid yourself that the 13 players suspended before the Iowa game would have made a difference. Iowa is a dark horse to win the Big Ten title this year.
The other major and minor football juggernauts that Ball State will be sacrificed to this fall include mighty Auburn and sort-of mighty Boston College. Now I read that in 2006, we'll be playing Michigan, Purdue and Indiana University.
I don't see the sense in it, though we can probably beat IU. Ball State should drop down to Division I-AA, so we can better compete on Saturdays.
