Junior earns win in debut at Butler

Rose Lehe led the cross country team into the start of its season by taking first place in the Butler Open this weekend. Lehe finished the meet with a time of 17:43, two seconds faster than former Ball State runner Jill Scully, who ran the meet unattached to the team.The meet was a non-scoring race that also featured teams from Butler and Marion College.Lehe’s first-place finish was her first win in her time at Ball State. She recorded two top-10 finishes for the squad last season. Lehe’s teammates did not trail far behind her.Freshman Vanessa Gilbert opened her Cardinal cross country career in outstanding fashion, finishing in fourth place with a time of 18:23. Coach Sue Parks acknowledged at the beginning of the season that Gilbert would contribute immediately to the team this year. Junior Amanda Ponsot, senior Helen Kibby and freshman Allison Grissom rounded out the top five for the Cardinals. All three placed in the top 10 at the event. Freshman Sara Martin also competed in her first meet, finishing 22nd with a time of 21:33. Ball State will participate in its first regular meet of the season on Sept. 16 at the Indiana Intercollegiates in Bloomington.
