FIELD HOCKEY: Cards fall short against ranked squads

Senior's three goals not enough to push team to victories

Chantelle Isaac-Smith scored three goals in two games for the field hockey team, but it wasn't enough to lead Ball State to a victory.

Ball State (1-5) fell to Northwestern 4-3 in overtime on Friday, and lost to Louisville 5-1 on Saturday.

"We played a fantastic game [against Northwestern]," head coach Annette Payne said. "We just fell shy in overtime, but the team played great."

Isaac-Smith scored her fourth goal of the season just six minutes into the game against Northwestern. Sophomore Katie Kloeckener assisted the play for her first career point.

The Wildcats (5-2) scored three unanswered goals to lead 3-1 early in the second half. Tara Reed scored her first goal of the year on an assist from Lindsay Quay to pull the Cards within one.

Isaac-Smith then scored her second goal of the game to force overtime.

Northwestern wasted little time in the extra frame, scoring at the 2:34 mark on an unassisted goal by Holly Palin.

"We played a phenomenal game," Payne said. "I'm really proud of the team. The ball just didn't fall our way in overtime."

No. 14 Louisville (7-2) scored all five goals in the first half. National points leader Jessica Javalet assisted two goals. Javalet has 13 goals and eight assists on the season for 34 points.

Tracy Bannister allowed four goals and made three saves before being replaced with two minutes remaining in the first half. Jessie Malone allowed one goal and made two saves in relief.

Ball State won the second half as Isaac-Smith scored the lone goal on an assist from Kloeckener.

"The difference was in first half and second half," Payne said. "We started to step up our effort level in the second half."

Louisville outshot the Ball State 24-8 and had 11 penalty corners to BSU's four.

Payne said she was pleased with the team's second half play but would like to see the team play well for the entire game.

"It's great to see them rebound," she said. "The second half was better but you gotta put two halves together."

Ball State plays its first home game of the season at 3 p.m. on Tuesday against Ohio State.
