Chantelle Isaac-Smith scored two second-half goals on Saturday to lead the Ball State University field hockey team to its first win of the season. Isaac-Smith scored two unassisted goals in a 12-second span as the Cardinals beat Providence 2-1.
The Cardinals (1-3) win snapped a three-game losing streak at the start of the season, including a 6-1 loss to Iowa on Friday.
A goal by Abby Maguire gave Providence a 1-0 lead in the first half. But the two goals by Isaac-Smith led BSU to the win.
"They played a great game," head coach Annette Payne said. "They were passing well, competing well and playing smart hockey."
The Cards jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against Iowa, but the Hawkeyes scored two goals just before the end of the first half. Iowa added four more goals in the second half and outshot Ball State 25-10 for the game.
Payne said she was pleased with how her team learned from the loss.
"I'm happy," Payne said. "We had a strong first half [against Iowa], then we learned from that and came out ready to play. And it showed."
Lindsay Quay scored her second goal of the season just 1:40 into the game against Iowa. Carla Chiampi and Maggie Durbin assisted the Quay goal.
"I think the biggest thing is we definitely stepped up and scored first, which was huge," Payne said. "Then momentum shifted. It's definitely not something we wanted to happen.
"It's unfortunate, but you have to deal with it and learn from it."
Tracy Bannister recorded 10 saves against Iowa and five against Providence. Ball State outshot the Friars 15-11 and held a 7-3 penalty corners advantage.
Payne said the team rebounded well from the loss to Iowa and played magnificent against Providence.
"It's what we had to do, take the good and knew what we had to change," she said. "It was good, the team played well, all 17 of the girls played great."
