Ohio continued its dominance over the Ball State's field hockey team on Friday. The Bobcats scored two first-half goals and cruised to a 13th straight victory over the Cardinals, 5-1.
Despite losing the Mid-American Conference opener at home, Ball State forward Lindsay Quay said the game was a learning experience.
"We basically learned that the MAC is up for grabs," Quay said. "Any team is good enough. Whoever shows up that day is going to win the game. And we didn't show up today. We didn't play like a team.
"We're taking away the fact that we need to show up every game now from here on out and play together in order to succeed."
Ohio (2-5, 1-0 MAC) led at halftime 2-0, but added three goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Torrie Albini led the Bobcats with two goals.
Goalkeeper Jessica Malone started for the Cardinals in net, making eight saves. Although she allowed five goals, head coach Annette Payne felt the team was responsible for allowing the goals.
"As a team, we didn't control [the ball] very well," Payne said. "It doesn't fall on anybody's shoulders."
The Cardinals (1-7, 0-1 MAC) refused to quit following the 5-0 deficit and registered more shots (13-6) and more penalty corners (7-2) than Ohio in the second half.
Lindsay Quay notched her third goal of the season on a penalty corner at the 50:33 mark, with Carla Chiampi and Maggie Durbin assisting the play.
Chiampi said the team picked up the intensity in the second half, but needs to play hard every day.
"We need to work on all showing up to play and just concentrate on the little things that we work at every day in practice," she said. "And just work on showing up every day, not just in games."
Durbin said the team needs to play well for the entire game.
"We talk about every game putting two halves together, putting 70 minutes in a row together," Durbin said. "We just need to work on taking our spurts and putting them together."
Although the team has now lost four games in a row, Quay is optimistic about a turnaround.
"I just think that a lot of people have given up on us," Quay said. "But don't, because our team is a fighting team and we're going to come back."
