The Ball State University women's cross country team won the meet this weekend when it headed north to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the George Dales Invitational.
The Cardinals placed in the top three spots and had four runners in the top ten while competing against Mid-American Conference foes Western Michigan and Central Michigan. Ball State scored 31 points while the Broncos and Chippewas scored 41 and 54 points, respectively.
Junior Rose Lehe continued to set the pace for the Cardinals with her third consecutive first-place finish in 17:51. Freshman Vanessa Gilbert finished runner-up in 17:58. Rounding out the top ten, junior Amanda Ponsot had her best run of the season in 18:11 which was good enough for third place. Senior Helen Kibby also had a successful run with a time of 18:37.
Coach Sue Parks' goal of getting the top five grouped within a minute of each other finally transpired when the top five runners' gap was 51 seconds, an improvement on the two- to three-minute gaps two weeks ago. All nine runners finished in the top 34 spots: Nicole Hartford with 18:42, Allison Grissom with 19:16, Katie Koehler with 19:20, Lindsay Moldstad with 20:40 and Sara Martin with 21:29.
Lehe, before running in Michigan, was a nominee for MAC Runner of the Week.
The Cardinals will run in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Ill., where the team will look for a bit of revenge against Marquette University. Ball State placed second to them a year ago.
