Thirty new organizations, activities offered to students

Clubs offer chance to get involved in community, campus

A revamped McKinley Avenue isn’t the only new addition students will find at Ball State this year. Thirty new and reactivated student organizations have also found their way to Ball State’s campus.

The previous school year saw 21 new student organizations, Stacy Myers, Coordinator of the Office of Student Organizations and Activities, said.

“We had some very enthusiastic students who wanted to get involved this year,” Myers said.

One of the new organizations offered to students this year, the American Fisheries Society, is the largest national professional organization in the country, with more than 20,000 members nationwide, Tom Lauer, BSU Professor and Director of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries Center, said.

“We get [students] involved in the profession; we get them involved in networking with the professionals,” said Lauer. “We provide opportunities for them to learn more about fishery science outside the classroom and see what’s going on through field trips and guest speakers.”

Also new to campus this year is the Best Buddies Organization. Founded in 1989, the organization features programs in many middle schools, high schools and colleges nationwide. Best Buddies Organization also has an “e-buddies” program which pairs people in online friendships.

“We take college students and pair them up with intellectually challenged adults in the community to hang out, play games,” Ami Hittle, Treasurer of Ball States Best Buddies organization said. “Basically, to break the barrier between the two societies and bring them together,”

The 2005 school year also saw the birth of the Electronic Gaming League, which provides students with gaming equipment, including 16 Xbox consoles, 25 personal computers and a wide array of games to choose from.

“We’re trying to bring together people who enjoy video games from all across campus so they can get together in one place and enjoy it,” Pete Mathias, President of the Extreme Gaming League said.

Along with these new organizations students can get involved in departmental, professional, greek, multicultural, performance, forensic and religious organizations.
