MEN'S BASKETBALL Opening tourney status in question

Directors look to fill holes in 2005-06 game schedule

The CoSIDA Classic, originally to be hosted by Ball State from Nov. 18-20, is not likely to happen, two members of the athletics administration said.

Director of Gameday Experience Chris Taylor and Associate Athletics Director Joe Hernandez both said the CoSIDA Classic will likely not be held at Ball State this season.

“At this point, based on contract problems, it’s not going to happen,” Taylor said.

Ball State and CoSIDA were working with Blue Ridge Sports and Entertainment to find three opponents for the tournament. A deadline was set by the independent entity for a decision to be mutually made by Ball State and CoSIDA on the opponents by July, but because the opponents weren’t found in time, Ball State is no longer contractually obligated to find schools.

Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham declined to comment.

“It’s just stuff that happens,” Taylor said. “It’s not like it’s some big issue. The deadline was passed, and they couldn’t come upon agreeing to terms.”

As a result, Taylor said Ball State is looking to replace the CoSIDA Classic with two home games.

“We have contracts in the mail,” he said on finding two replacements. “We are waiting for those to be returned.”

No decision has been made on the two new opponents.

“We’ve probably talked to 200 schools since March to fill CoSIDA or fill the schedule,” Hernandez said.

The CoSIDA Classic is sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Participants in the CoSIDA Classic play more than one game, but the tournament is counted as only one game on the schedule. All games played, however, count on a team’s record.

The finalists in the CoSIDA Classic will have played all three opponents, meaning Ball State could possibly have lost an additional home game this season.

“We’re looking at other teams to come in,” Taylor said. “At this point its about trying to get a schedule put together. Other teams have their schedules filled.”
