YART, a combination yard sale and art fair, makes its yearly appearance in downtown Muncie this weekend.
From 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Ball State students can experience the culture within the city by viewing art from Muncie and Ball State artists. Local artists will be teaming up with various musical groups to give guests a taste of their talents. YART, an event organized to expose the talent in Muncie, caters to college students and offers artwork ideal for decorating bare dorm rooms or empty apartments. YART coincides not only with college taste, but also with college budgets, with all of the art priced at a maximum of $50.
“Art is supposed to bring out everyone who has an interest in the arts, not just those that are able to pay a lot of money,” Graham Watson, president of Ball State Student Art Development, said.
Watson has been involved in YART for three years and said he feels it is important to support local artists. He believes that YART is worth attending because of the art, bands and inexpensive prices.
“It would be impractical to have really expensive art sold like this because you won’t get people willing to pay a lot of money, especially in a college town,” Graham said.
Local bands will also be at YART to celebrate the cultural event. Spitshine, one band scheduled to appear on stage, has been around Muncie for years, as have most of the bands that will be at the event, according to Watson.
Each artist reserves a space on the cross streets of Charles and Walnut to display his or her work, and shoppers can enjoy the background music while browsing for artwork, or they can head over to the stage to check out the bands. All proceeds from the artwork go to the artists.
