The Society of Professional Journalists announced the winners of the 2004 Mark of Excellence awards on Monday, and it named Ball Bearings the nation's best all-around independent online student publication. Ball Bearings is Ball State University's Web-based news publication.
The Society of Professional Journalists Convention and National Journalism Conference will recognize the winners of the awards on Oct. 17 in Las Vegas.
College journalism students submitted more than 3,000 entries for the contest, within 45 categories.
Before becoming national winners, all national competitors also won first place in one of the society's regional competitions.
Ball State student Jacquelin Clark was a national finalist for the online feature reporting section, but she did not win the category.
The winners of the Mark of Excellence awards are the best representation of college journalists, Jim Highland, vice president for the organization's campus chapter affairs, said in a press release about the awards.
Ball Bearings offers opportunities to journalism majors in any sequence to work for a multimedia publication.
The program combines writers, designers, photographers and others to create an outlet for local news and entertainment stories.
