Ball State's top doubles team will compete in the 2005 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship.
Matt Baccarani and Patrick Thompson, currently ranked 24th in the nation, are one of 32 teams competing in the doubles tournament. They'll take on Illinois' Ryler DeHeart and GD Jones, ranked 19th, today.
The Cardinals duo defeated DeHeart and Jones on Jan. 22, with 9-8 (4).
The tandem also helped Ball State win the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championship this season, going 23-3 as the top doubles team, including a 4-0 record against MAC opponents.
In the MAC championship match against Western Michigan, Baccarani and Thompson scored a crucial 9-8 win that gave Ball State the doubles point.
UCLA's doubles team of Alberto Francis and Kris Kwinta dropped out of the NCAA tournament, opening the door for Baccarani and Thompson.
They are the first Ball State tennis players to compete in the NCAA Championship since John Amos in 1994, and they are the first doubles team to do so since 1992.
