Due to an erroneous early report, The Daily News incorrectly reported the fraternity involved in the incident that occurred this morning. We apologize for this confusion and we are working to correct this information.
One suspect is in custody today as police investigate a series of incidents that are believed to have stemmed from a party at a Ball State fraternity early this morning.
At 2:15 a.m. Muncie Police were dispatched to a Ball State fraternity on West Riverside Avenue, on a report of a fight on the property, Sgt. Turner of the Muncie Police Department said.
According to Turner, five people attempted to enter the house uninvited and were turned away. At some point following, one of the five suspects struck the back of the head of one of the fraternity members, causing injury. The victim's identity and condition are currently unavailable.
As police were on their way to the scene, witnesses reported hearing shots fired around the intersection of Beechwood Avenue and Locust Street.
Senior Katie Hougland said she was sleeping when she heard a man scream outside her nearby residence. Shortly after, Hougland said, she heard what she believed to be gunshots.
Turner said a Ruger 9 mm semi-automatic handgun was found in a wooded area at the northwest corner of the intersection. Ten 9 mm casings were also recovered from along the west side of Locust Street, immediately next to the wooded area.
One male suspect, one of the five who attempted to enter, was arrested on charges of criminal recklessness and possession of a handgun without a permit, Turner said.
