The Ball State University Singers will be performing their 41st annual Spectacular show Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in Emens Auditorium. This is the University Singers' big end of the year show.? It's a culmination of everything the group has done over the year, according to director Dr. Jeffrey Carter. Carter is an assistant professor of music at Ball Sate and said that this is his fifth year doing the Spectacular show.?
"It's our home stage with all the full effects, lights, costumes. It's got a different feel to it," Carter said. "It's the equivalent to the home team coming home to play the last game of the season at home."
The University Singers is a group of 40, with 20 singers and dancers, 20 band members and 10 members of the technical crew.? The group travels extensively, with over 20 foreign countries under their belts. The University Singers has performed on cruise ships, at presidential inaugurations, in the White House and in many major entertainment competitions. They most recently returned from Southern California and will leave for a tour of China in May 2005.?
"This is one of our best vocals year," Carter said. "We're putting a little less emphasis on dance and more on drama."
This decision, according to Carter, is due to last year's Spectacular, where the alumni of the University Singers returned to the stage.?
"How do you top the 40th?" Carter said. "There will be some incredible moments vocally, the kind of sounds that will send chills up and down your spine."
Carter said that there will be some unexpected moments on stage this year. Some melodies, especially a number from the "Big River" musical, are really different than anything that the group usually does.
"Our patriotic sections really sends people out smiling," Carter said.
The Ball State University Singers is a completely group effort, according to Carter. Auditions for next year's show will be held on April 23, 24 and 30. Students wishing to audition should contact Carter or go online to the group's Web site: www.bsu.edu/univsingers.?
