The softball team will look to break a four-game losing skid today. Ball State returns home to face Indiana State for a doubleheader matchup at 2 p.m.
The Cardinals (10-22, 0-3 Mid-American Conference) have dropped four straight games, with the last three coming on the road. The last BSU victory came at home against IUPUI when the Cards took both games of a doubleheader.
Although the two games against Indiana State are non-conference, coach Terri Laux knows every game is important.
"Every game for the rest of the year is gonna be big for us, especially in conference play," Laux said.
Indiana State (8-14) has won three of its last five games. Sarah Kothe leads the team with a .358 batting average and is the lone Sycamore hitting above .300. Indiana State hits .228 as a team, while Ball State averages .205.
The Sycamores also have a better ERA, as their team average is lower than the best Cardinal pitcher. Indiana State boasts a 3.05 ERA, while Nikki Hellem leads the Cards with a 3.48 average. Amy Brownfield is second with a 3.50 ERA as the team average is 4.67.
The Cardinals are coming off a three-game sweep by Toledo, in which they only scored three runs. BSU has been outscored 171-75 this year.
Laux said in order to find success, the team will need to need to make some changes in the approach to the game.
"We need to continue to get better and make adjustments," Laux said. "We need to try to improve every time out to get comfortable and get consistent."
