LETTER: Daily News missed coverage of Debate Team victory, title

Dear Editor,

In my four years at Ball State University, I was never prouder to be a Ball State student than I was this weekend. I am a member of the Ball State Debate team, and this weekend, my teammates and I took home the National Educational Debate Association Team National Championship, after an amazing performance against nine other schools this Friday and Saturday. Many people from the Ball State and Muncie community, including professors, students, parents, and teachers, came out to judge and support the event. When it was over, Ball State emerged with five semi-final teams, five National runners up and one National Champion. Much to my dismay, this information was omitted from the Daily News on Monday morning. According to my research, Ball State has not won a team national title in anything. Although it might be important that a few fraternities had a barbecue and a baseball player from Tampa Bay was suspended for steroids, it is also important that for once, Ball State was recognized as the best at something on a national level. Unfortunately, because there were no alcohol violations or positive tests for performance enhancing drugs at the debate tournament, some people might not find it news worthy. However, we did have nine students and three coaches who spent countless hours preparing for a year to obtain this title. If that is not news, I don't know what is.
