Gora announces interim provost, search committee

President plans to see finalists in Fall 2005

Gora announced Friday in an e-mail to faculty and staff that Associate Provost Deborah Balogh will serve as interim provost and Frank Sabatine, dean of extended education, will serve as associate provost beginning June 1.

"I have great confidence in this team to keep Ball State's priorities moving forward during this time of transition and opportunity," Gora said in the e-mail.

Balogh will take over for Provost Beverley Pitts because she plans to leave her Ball State post June 30 to start her five-year contract as president of the University of Indianapolis.

"I'm extremely supportive and I think it's a wonderful selection," Pitts said. "She's a very good manager. She's an outstanding scholar and faculty member, and she cares very much about the academic quality of the university."

Balogh and Sabatine said they plan to help Ball State's academic affairs stay on track until a provost is hired later this year.

In the e-mail, Gora also announced the members of the provost's search committee. Gora said she appointed O'Neal Smitherman, vice president of information technology, as chairman of the provost search committee.

Smitherman said he and Gora selected the search committee's 19 members - one secretary, eight professors, three deans, two students, two directors, two department chairs, one associate vice president - to represent the university.

The committee met for the first time today, but it already finalized an advertisement for the Chronicle of Higher Education, Smitherman said.

Gora said the committee will continue working through the summer with the goal to have finalists on campus by the first few weeks of the fall semester.
