Delta Zeta prepares for Turtle Tugs contest

Event to benefit Gallaudet University, Sound Beginnings

Water balloons, Jell-O-eating contests and Capture the Flag will take over Emerson Park Saturday when members of Ball State's greek community come together for Delta Zeta sorority's Turtle Tugs.

The annual event will take place at 11 a.m. at Emerson Park, located across from Zeta Beta Tau and Sigma Nu at Ashland and Linden Avenues, Kristin Westerfield, Delta Zeta philanthropy chairwoman, said.

Teams, which consist of five people, cost $50 to register. If an organization registers two teams, it can register a third for free, Westerfield said. Early registration will last until 10:45 a.m.

Proceeds from Saturday's event will benefit Delta Zeta's national philanthropies promote unity among members of the greek community.

"It's a good chance for the greeks or anyone else to come together, have a really good time and give money to a great cause," Westerfield said. "It just shows that giving back to your community can be really fun, too."

Delta Zeta's national philanthropies include Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., and Sound Beginnings, a program that educates mothers about the importance of hearing tests and treatment for newborns.

Delta Zeta can use the money to purchase items such as pamphlets from Sound Beginnings and distribute them to local hospitals, Westerfield said. It gives the sorority a chance to localize a national organization.

"We're going to be giving back to the Delaware County community and the Muncie community," she said. "We've added this new local component to our philanthropy."

Saturday's event will include five major activities -- Tug of War, Capture the Flag, Jell-O Jiggler Eating, Balloon Toss and Messy Obstacle. Messy Obstacle will consist of slipping and sliding into green gelatin and popping gelatin balloons.

Several local businesses donated money and gift certificates to Turtle Tugs, including Moorehead Communications and Indiana Heart Associates, Westerfield said. Skyline Chili will also sell food at the event.

Prizes will be given to several teams, including the top all-male, top all-female, top co-ed and most spirited.

Jennica Dixon, a member of Delta Zeta, said past Tugs events she participated in were successful. The organization raised about $2,500 last year, Westerfield said.

Dixon hopes students are excited about participating and making this year even more successful, she said.

"It's a great way to come out, let loose and have a little bit of fun together," Dixon said. "I hope a lot of people come out, support our philanthropy and have a good time."
