BSU vehicle hits student on McKinley

Office to investigate incident before deciding to discipline 31-year college employee

A Ball State student was hit by a university-owned vehicle Monday around 12:30 p.m. as she tried to cross McKinley Avenue near Anthony Apartments, according to the police report.

Fifth-year student Yu-Chun Liu was hit and knocked to the ground by the right side mirror of the Ford Taurus driven by Gregory A. Darnell, an energy control center technician for the department of facilities planning and management, according to the report.

Liu was hit after exiting the shuttle bus and attempting to cross the street between the back of the shuttle and a car stopped behind it. As Darnell tried to pass the university shuttle bus and the vehicle that stopped behind it, Liu walked into the moving car, according to the report.

Liu was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital, treated for minor injuries and then released a few hours later, a BMH Emergency Room staff member said.

Darnell has been employed at Ball State for 31 years, Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities planning and management, said.

Kenyon said Darnell has not been involved in any other university-related accidents.

Possible consequences for Darnell will depend on the police investigation, Kenyon said. Any actions taken would be confidential because it is a personnel issue, he said.

"If there is negligence involved, we would take action," Kenyon said. "We take all driving and actions very seriously."

Kenyon said the university has a procedure to handle these types of situations.

"We'll evaluate the situation and undoubtedly have a discussion with Greg and go from there," he said.

The last time a member of the department was involved in a car accident with a student was five years ago, Kenyon said. In that accident, the door of a utility truck accidentally flew open and hit a student. These situations are extremely rare, he said.
