Is there a certain way Republicans and Democrats dress? I am one of those students on campus without a car so if I want to venture into the outside world, I have to use the MITS. One day, while sitting on the bus on the way to downtown, my backpack sparked a statement of anger from the lady behind me. If it were not a statement of anger, then she just really has intense feelings on how she thinks Republicans should dress.
"You dress like he's your president," came from the older lady in the seat behind me. The woman's response came from reading a button on my backpack that has a picture of George W. Bush that says, "He's not my president!" I had to look at the clothes that I had on at the time to see on what grounds this woman was basing her opinion of me. Yes, I am one of those people who, if they don't look down occasionally, will forget how they dressed themselves earlier in the day.
As I looked down, I saw that I had on brown plaid pants ($9 at a thrift store and courtesy of my mom), a white shirt with brown vest on over it (shirt given to me from my little sister and the vest from my grandmother), bright pink Roos on my feet and a black wool coat on with a scarf (Christmas presents from my parents). I am a Democrat, and anyone who knows me knows that. Actually, anyone who first meets me usually gets the idea of my political party within minutes. Surely this woman got that from the pin. However, I guess she could have thought I was of a different political persuasion or one of those few Republicans who doesn't worship at the temple of Bush.
If she could have known I wore hand me downs and thrift store clothes, would that have made a difference in her opinion of me? I have some Republican friends who also do their shopping at Goodwill at times. Maybe she knew I was a Democrat but thought I was dressing too snobbish for my party. Granted, my Roos did put me back about 60 bucks but those were one of those buys one gives themselves after first getting their financial aid check after they buy books. Maybe she saw my Fossil watch. However, that was a birthday gift from my older sister and my two year old niece.
I don't know exactly why this woman based her opinion of me on my clothing. Maybe she was just having a bad day and wanted to say something mean or harmful to someone. Maybe she wanted me to think. Nah. I did think, and I told all my friends and even my pastor. I was highly confused. I guess we are all guilty of forming our opinions of people by what they have on or things they own. However, none of this answers my confusion. Can you really identify a Republican or Democrat by what they wear? I'm thinking not, but if so, someone should really inform me.
