SWIMMING IN BROKEN GLASS: Bush's latest appointments ironic

The Internet is awash with procrastination aids. Some of the most enjoyable are the humorous little videos that can be found at ifilm.com, jibjab.com and idiotwork.com.

Idiot Work's video, which mixes "The Big Lebowski" dialogue with scenes from "He-Man," is a great example.

Political videos are often favorites. A clip of Ann Coulter on Canadian TV foolishly claiming that Canada sent troops to Vietnam is especially hilarious when the host corrects her and she continues to insist she's right. How Bush-like: unable to admit mistakes.

One particular video of President Bush seems appropriate given recent decisions. On Ifilm there's a video titled "Bush's One Finger Victory Salute" where then-governor Bush flashes a middle finger.

He ought to do that more often. It's what his nominations of John Bolton to be United Nations ambassador and Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz to be head of the World Bank amount to -- two giant middle fingers to our allies.

Surely the administration must know how controversial and offensive these choices are. This can't be like "The Passion of the Christ" where director Mel Gibson was simply unaware of the inflammatory message conveyed by his frequent shots of Jewish high priests.

No, Bush and his cronies know exactly what they're saying to the world by promoting Bolton and Wolfowitz.

Let's start with Bolton. How about a little juxtaposition? On the day of Bolton's nomination Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said, according to CNN, "John Bolton is personally committed to the future success of the United Nations, and he will be a strong voice for reform at a time when the United Nations has begun to reform itself to help meet the challenging agenda before the international community."

Bolton, on the other hand, said in 1994, "there is no such thing as the United Nations," and "If the U.N. secretary building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference."

That's how stupid the administration thinks the U.S. and the rest of the world are.

Didn't Bush just go to Europe to try and affirm the importance of multilateralism? Forget that. According to the Washington Post, "European officials said they were puzzled at how the appointment meshed with the administration's recent efforts at consultative diplomacy."

The CNN article also notes the fiery statements Bolton made that resulted in North Korea refusing to negotiate with him. The man's clearly an ideologue and loose cannon. Just check out the video of him at www.stopbolton.org to see him shooting off cannonballs.

Wolfowitz is as synonymous with radical neoconservatism as 50 Cent is with gangsta rap. And on the list of those responsible for the mess that is Iraq, he's in the top five. He's the one who said we'd be welcomed as liberators and would not need hundreds of thousands of troops in Iraq. According to the Financial Times, "that miscalculation, say critics, increased the U.S. body count as coalition forces struggled to defeat a stubborn insurgency."

So it's a repeat of Condoleezza Rice: royally screw up in a way that results in tons of casualties, get a promotion! Perfectly logical in Bushworld. At least the appointment will eject him from the Pentagon.

Yes, we now have all the evidence we need to know that any new claims of the administration about reaching out to other countries are utter BS.
