SOFTBALL Cards travel to Dayton for Double header

Ball State is slated to play a doubleheader in Dayton, Ohio, today. The first game with the Dayton Flyers is at 2 p.m.

The Cardinals (4-12) have not played since Wednesday, when they lost both games of a doubleheader at then-No. 21 Missouri. They lost 10-0 in the opener, then jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game before the Tigers came back for a 15-7 victory.

The day before, Ball State split a doubleheader at Southwest Missouri State, losing 6-1 and winning 2-1.

The previous weekend, Ball State took third place at the Brechtelsbauer Southern Classic at Southern Illinois, winning two games and dropping a pair. Both wins were shutouts over Valparaiso, 8-0 and 4-0.

Dayton is 2-2 and has not played since Feb. 27. Since then eight games have been postponed or canceled because of inclement weather.

Junior first baseman Kate Pilger was named Mid-American Conference West Player of the Week after batting .455 in BSU's four games last week. It is the second time this season a BSU player has been named player of the week, with shortstop Taylor Yancey being the other honoree.

On the season, Pilger leads the team with a .333 average. However, she is the lone player batting above .275, as the Cards are hitting just .205 as a team.

Pilger, Kelli Jeziorski (.275) and Amanda Pick (.268) have all scored 11 runs, while Yancey (.222) paces the team with eight RBI.

Nicki Hellem (1-3, 5.16 ERA) has been the top pitcher so far.
