'Vagina Monologues' cancelled

V-Day celebration, play take aim at ending violence toward women

Ball State University's women's honors society, Iota Iota Iota, has canceled the upcoming V-Day celebrations slated for Feb. 17, 18 and 20.

Iota Iota Iota Events Coordinator Ranada Bowie said scheduling conflicts were the cause for the abrupt cancellation.

"It was a miscommunication," Bowie said. "They booked us the wrong month so we just couldn't do it."

Bowie was notified of the problem last week when V-Day organizers alerted her that they had scheduled the event for March; Bowie said she had originally booked the V-Day celebrations for mid-February. Iota Iota Iota's booking coincided with a fund-raising effort for A Better Way, Muncie's battered women's shelter.

"It was supposed to be booked for February, but they had it moved to March," Bowie said. "The contract said that V-Day rights would cost a certain amount of money per day if booked past February. We didn't want to spend the money we were raising for A Better Way."

Because "The Vagina Monologues" is performed in conjunction with V-Day celebrations to raise awareness for women's rights issues world-wide, the loss of one always means the loss of both. Bowie said she had contacted student players and stage staff about the cancellation and has no plans to fill the empty time slot but still plans to hold events in the upcoming months.

"I just got the e-mail out, and now I have to talk to the Iota Iota Iota committee about events," Bowie said. "We would maybe have a fair, maybe a forum; nothing major."

While the events have been canceled, the fund-raising effort will continue with all proceeds going to A Better Way.
