The Minnetrista Cultural Center will have its 15th annual Juried Art Show and Sale this weekend, giving entrants the opportunity to showcase their art to the Muncie community.
A total of 75 artists have been selected from a pool of 94 to participate in the competition. Of those artists, 40 represent the professional division, those who earn $800 or more per year in art sales, and 35 represent the avocational division, those who earn less than $800 per year in art sales, do not teach art or are students.
A total of 110 pieces have been selected for display and include paintings, drawings, mixed media, prints, sculptures, fiber, metal work, ceramics and photography.
Minnetrista Cultural Center Interim President and C.E.O. Karen Vincent says that while many artists from surrounding cities and schools are represented, there is always a sizable number of entries from those with connections to Ball State University.
"It is probably two-thirds student entries and then the other people in the area," Vincent said. "We also have professors from the school ... We've always had a lot of participation from the Ball State community -- probably more than any other thing we do."
Artists 18 years of age and older were required to submit their pieces for the professional division by Jan. 7, or the avocational division by Feb. 5. Entrants were allowed to submit multiple pieces for the show.
A juror will announce the contest winners at a reception for the entrants and their guests from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today. This year's juror is John Begley, Gallery Director of the Allen R. Hite Art Institute at the University of Louisville. Each division's winner will receive a $500 prize for their work.
Vincent says that the exhibit not only gives the artists an opportunity to expose the public to their work, it also gives many the chance to make a little extra cash.
"Probably about 90 percent of the pieces are for sale," Vincent said. "The artist sets the price, Minnetrista receives 30 percent of the price and the artist gets 70."
The exhibit will be shown in the Minnetrista Gallery Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $4 for students, $7 for adults.
