LETTER: Students upset with the handling of willing students

Dear Editor,

Student Government Association, the voice of Ball State students, has denied the very members it represents the right to speak.

During Wednesday's meeting, a group of students intended to speak on behalf of those students who are concerned that our future government is being chosen for us. These students, though inexperienced in Ball State University's Student Government Association, were willing to give our campus an option. They saw a problem, and they put themselves out there to fix it. But when the time came for the organization that supposedly listens to our concerns to hear them, the senators of the Student Government Association opposed the motion to let them speak.

All this group of students wanted to do was give BSU an option where it had none. Their aim was to give students another possibility and let them decide who they wanted to represent them. We understand that they missed the original deadline, and if another slate had stepped up earlier in the process, there would have been no need for a slate to try and come in at this time. However, their goal was not to necessarily be the opposing slate but to give students the option to vote in an election.

This group of students did not present themselves to SGA with themselves in mind. They went out on a limb for the entire campus so that we could have a choice. In three hours, this group of students was able to collect over 300 signatures from students who want that choice.

While sitting in Cardinal Hall, we were appalled to hear the majority of the senators decline these students the chance to speak. If they don't listen, how can they hear our concerns? If even only one student walked into that room, shouldn't she or he have the right to be heard? As first time attendants of a Student Government Association meeting, we were surprised to find ourselves feeling unwelcome and unappreciated. We are left with only one question in my mind: Does SGA really care about the students -- do they really care about us?
