LETTER: Slate ran becuase students should be given choice to vote

Dear Editor,

"We didn't lose -- we weren't given a chance!" This is what I'm telling the students that keep coming up to me to say they are sorry for what happened. What we tried to accomplish in less than 24 hours was no small task. The idea to form our own slate came about to give ourselves more credibility in front of the Senate and to show them and the students how serious we were about making a difference. The senate was wrong to make such a quick decision. We had a valid argument with many reasons why Team Us should not run unopposed, and the backing of 300 students in the 2-hour time slot we received in the election packet. Those 300 students signed -- not based on our platform, but on the basis that they should have a vote. Given more time, I know we could have had more signatures and more support. SGA represents the interest of the student body, and should uphold that interest even if it means changing some rules. Tuesday afternoon, they selfishly acted in the interest of the members of the senate and not of the student body.
