Two senior members of the 2004 football team -- safety Justin Beriault and punter Reggie Hodges -- have been invited to participate in the National Football League Draft Combine. The annual combine begins Feb. 23 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
If selected in the April draft, Beriault and Hodges would be the first Ball State players selected since punter Brad Maynard and safety Cory Gilliard in 1997. In all, 20 Ball State players have been selected in the draft, dating back to Tim Brown in 1959.
In addition, Hodges has been invited to participate in Saturday's East-West Shrine All-Star Game at San Francisco's SBC Park. Beriault has been invited to play in the Las Vegas All-American Classic on Jan. 22. They are the first Ball State players invited to a college football all-star game since kicker Brent Lockliear played in the 1997 Blue-Gray Game.
Hodges received Ball State's special teams award this season after averaging 42.6 yards on 73 punts, good for second in the Mid-American Conference and 26th in the nation. Twenty of his punts pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line. He is the school's career leader with 254 punts.
Beriault notched 125 tackles, second-best in the MAC and 10th-best nationally. He started 45 of his 46 games at Ball State and moved to safety as a junior after two seasons at outside linebacker.
Beriault and Hodges were both First-Team All-MAC honorees. Beriault was also named First Team in 2003 and Second Team in 2002.
