SWIMMING: Teams place second in Akron

The Ball State men's and women's swim team both took second place at the Giant Eagle Zippy Invitational in Akron, Ohio. The women's took second out of eight teams with a score of 1,289, just shy of Tulane's 1,344.50 points. The men also took a very close second with 1,568.50 points, just 8.5 points short of St. Bonaventure's 1,576 points. Both teams were in first place heading into Sunday's competition.

Friday night, out of 12 events, the men's and women's swim team won first place in two of them. Addison Del Rio won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.23. The win came from Kurtis Leer, who won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.90. Sarah Welter, Ashley Vanosdol, Abby Arnold and Karla Bailey also contributed by taking second place in the 200 freestyle relay.

On Saturday, Ball State had a little better day, winning six of the next 16 events. Del Rio, Bailey, Erin Johnson and Tara Zimmer began the day by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:47.08, beating the meet record of 1:47.68. The men took second place in the same event.

In individual action, Adam Konopka won the 400 IM with a time of 4:08.07. Kurtis Leer then won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.89.

Zach Hall won the100-yard breaststroke with the time 51.84. Senior Ryan Plantz won the 1-meter diving event with the final score of 277.50. 

In women's action, Brittany Sayler won the 100 backstroke with the time of 58.78.

During the final day of competition, Leer won the 100 freestyle, with a record meet time of 45.25, while Konopka took second in the 200 backstroke (1:53.31).

Zimmer paced the women by taking second in the 200 breaststroke with a clocking of 2:23.47.

Both the men's and women's squads will return to action Saturday with a 2 p.m. meet at Michigan State.
