SWIMMING Teams head to East Lansing to take on Spartans

BSU women and men fell to MSU in meets last season

The Ball State men and women's swimming team heads to East Lansing, Mich., tomorrow to go head to head with Big Ten powerhouse Michigan State.

The men hope to avenge their 141-102 loss to the Spartans. "Michigan State's men's swim team is very strong, very solid," assistant coach Jason Mahowald said. "They are going to be tough to challenge, and very tough to beat."

The men's team is hoping to beat the Spartans in diving, sprint freestyles, and relays. The Spartans come into this meet with a 2-4 record and placed fifth at the Georgia Invitational this past weekend. Ball State's men come in with a 0-1 record, having placed second at Akron's Zippy Invitational last weekend.

The women's team also hopes to avenge a loss to the Spartans. However, their vengeance may prove to be sweeter, because last year, the Cards lost to Michigan State in a close, 126-117 match. "It was neck and neck the entire time," co-head coach Siebold-Caudill said. "It came down to the very last meet, and they got over us. It was very upsetting, but we hope to go back this year and get over them this time."

The women go to Lansing hoping to be able to best the Spartans at the 200-yard butterfly, as well as the backstroke event. The Spartans come into this meet at 0-4 record and placed sixth at the Georgia Invitational. Ball State's women come in with a 3-1 record. They also placed second at the Zippy Invitational.

Ball State is one of the few MAC teams to meet a Big Ten school, so both teams are excited to see how they match up.

"Both of our teams had some really good times last week," Mahowald said. "We have just came off of a long weekend away from home, and now we have to complete a very strong Big Ten school. We are ready to see our the team handles the competition.

Siebold-Caudill, whose graduated from Michigan State, is also looking forward to a very competitive meet.

"We are going to have to do everything we can to stay with them this weekend" she said. "There are some events that we are really good at, but we are going to have to be exceptionally good at them in order to have a chance.

"However, I think they can be beat, and we are going to go there and show them that we can do just that."
