Nightclub closes after three weeks

Owner credits loss to lack of business, winter season

After being open less than three weeks, Baron's Place, a nightclub on Dill Street, has closed its doors.

Baron Lobasco, the owner of Baron's Place, which opened Nov. 3 and shut down Nov. 24., said the main reason for the club's closing was lack of customers.

"It wasn't economically viable to stay there," he said. "The return on our attendance was not there."

Baron said he was not entirely certain why the attendance was so low, but he ventured a few guesses.

"I believe some of it had to do with the timing, opening up just before the school went on its winter break and most of the students were more concerned with school work rather than going out," Baron said.

One aspect that was foreseen by some students to be a problem was that when the club first opened, it did not serve any hard liquor.

"We thought it wouldn't at first, and then we got liquor in there," Baron said. "Maybe for some of the girls that attended it helped but nothing too drastic in a way of turn-around."

Baron said he thought students weren't coming because students tend to go to places they are used to because that is where their friends go.

"I think with the small town atmosphere here in Muncie, it was hard to break into the business when all the other places were already entrenched," he said.
