NCAA president to speak on academics

Current NCAA and former Indiana University President Myles Brand is speaking today at Cardinal Hall in the Pittenger Student Center. His 1:30 p.m. address is titled "Achieving Fiscal Responsibility: Aligning Athletics with the Mission of Higher Education."

A three-man panel will respond to Brand's remarks. Panelists will be Bubba Cunningham, athletics director; James Ruebel, Dean of Honors College and the school's NCAA faculty representative; and Gregory Roskopf, graduate student in student affairs administration.

Brand's address is the 10th annual Jack Beyerl Lecture, sponsored by Ball State's division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Beyerl served as Ball State's vice president for student affairs from 1964 until retiring in 1988.

Brand became the NCAA's fourth president on Jan. 1, 2003. He was president of Indiana University from 1994-2002 and president of the University of Oregon from 1989-1994.
