SWIMMING Men, women fall to Miami over weekend

Cardinal men come up one point short of RedHawks at home

The men and women's swim team both suffered defeat at the hands of Mid-American Conference rival Miami this weekend.

On Friday, the women's team hoped to get payback on Miami after last year's defeat. However, the Cardinals came up short in Oxford, Ohio 177-118.

The women only won three of the 16 events. One of those victories was from Katie Boyle, who won the first event of her Cardinals career in the 1-meter diving event, scoring 232.57 points. Boyle also finished third in the 3-meter diving event.

One of the other two first-place events came in the 200-yard individual medley, where the Cards swept, led by Mary Brinkotter, who won with a time of 2:12.42. The other first came from Abby Arnold, Michelle Huang, Karla Bailey and Brittany Slayer in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.53.

On Saturday, the men's swim team, hoping to gain some leverage in its first dual meet of the season, suffered a heartbreaking loss at home, 121-120.

Ball State won seven of the 13 events, including a sweep in the 200-yard free, which Kurtis Leer won. Leer also won the 100 free, with a time of 46.83. Other strong members for the Cardinals included Jim Lullo, who won the 500 free (4:42.93), placed second in 1000 free (9:51.36) and contributed in placing third in the 400 free relay. The men's team also won the last event, placing first and third. However, it wasn't enough to overcome Miami.

The Ball State men and women's swimming and diving team will return to action next weekend, when it hosts the Doug Coers Invitational Nov. 19-20.
