SWIMMING: Both BSU squads take second place

Host school Purdue ran away with both the men's and women's teamtitles at Saturday's Indiana Intercollegiate, but Ball State tooksecond on both counts. The BSU men had 444 points to Purdue's 809and finished ahead of six others, while the women totaled 549 tothe Boilermakers' 840 in a seven-team field.

Junior Kurtis Leer paced the Cardinals on the men's side,winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.44 and the 100 free in46.36. Leer also teamed with Tyler McQuiston, Josh Willer and JeffSheets to take second in the 200 free relay (1:25.69).

Ryan Franklin had the team's other win, taking the 100breaststroke in 59.8. Runner-up finishes came from Jim Lullo in the500 free (4:44.28) and Willer in the 100 breast (59.98).

For the women, Erin Johnson's runner-up finish in the 100butterfly (57.72) was the top effort. The 200 free relay team ofBrittany Slayer, Ashley VanOsdol, Abby Arnold and Karla Bailey alsotook second, finishing in 1:38.04.

Thirds came from the 200 medley relay crew of Addison Del Rio,Tara Zimmer, Johnson and Sarah Welter, as well as CassandraPavlovich in the 3-meter diving event.

The men, who opened their season with the meet, have a week offbefore hosting Miami on Nov. 13. The women's team has home dualmeets with Akron on Friday and Buffalo on Saturday.
